I love the idea of bathing in sound in the middle of the desert. The beautiful, dry, red Moab desert visible through floor to ceiling window walls. Centering, resting deeply, listening, connecting, grounding. Taking it in.
I have experienced soundbaths in several kinds of spaces: the first one I went to was led by live musicians using loops of music, bird and nature sounds and vocals in an art studio in Northeast Minneapolis. It’s soothing, healing communal nature was intriguing to me and made me curious. People brought Yoga mats, blankets, pillows and rested as the sounds washed over and through us.
The second soundbath I attended was also here in Minneapolis, in a salt cave with fellow clinicians from Blossom, the group practice where I work along with Karla and Gretchen! The small, cozy, pink- lit space was resonant with sound and the scent of healing salt. We took time together to breathe, slow down, allow ourselves to replenish, our toes resting in sand.
And the third time was in a training room at a Community Mental Health Center in Minneapolis. It was part of a day of healing experiences to counterbalance the hard, daily grind of our work and the impact it has on us. As I rested, with my head towards the sounds of the bells, gongs and bowls created by the woman leading the experience I felt the sound create a relaxed and also vibrant state inside myself.
So when we were considering what might make our time in Moab with Dr. Kelly Wilson even more special I thought we could offer an optional soundbath for participants. It seemed like the perfect shared experience which brings together mindfulness, rest, reflection and sound healing.
I am really excited that we will be partnering with Crystal Blanks, of Mindful Movement Moab who will lead a healing and restorative soundbath on the second day of our Destination Psych CE Moab training. Crystal, who will be leading a soundbath and meditation is a local wellness practitioner who teaches yoga and mindfulness and is also a Reiki master.
Imagine it: slowing down after a rich day of learning, breathing, resting, surrounded by red rock desert, tones pouring over, around and through us.
