It’s More that Continuing Education
Karla, Jessica, and I have been reflecting on whether our Destination Psych CE events are retreats. It’s a fair question — we travel somewhere extraordinary, we step outside of our ordinary practice life, we learn together in a setting removed from the familiar hotel conference rooms we all know and love. By the loose definition the CE travel market has settled on, the answer is…maybe.
But the more we have talked about it, the more we have concluded that “retreat” is not quite right.
A retreat, in its root sense, is a turning inward and a turning away. The classic retreat model, as we see it in contemporary wellness weekends, is built on subtraction: less stimulation, less demand, less outward engagement. You withdraw from the world so that something interior can surface.

What we’ve designed is, in some ways, the opposite. We’re going into landscape, into the work of prominent clinician-scholars, into connection with colleagues who are grappling with the questions of our time.
What to Expect at Destination Psych CE Event:
You arrive your first day in the early afternoon to get the lay of the land (literally) and get checked in. As you look around, you may notice yourself breathing more fully, smiling without realizing. We gather in a beautiful space that allows us to take in our natural surroundings as we begin our opening session. The first evening closes with a sunset social.
The next two mornings, you start the day at your own pace — arrive early to explore and enjoy some breakfast, or slip in just as we are ready to begin. Two mornings of substantive, rigorous learning with a clinician-scholar at the top of their field. And then the afternoons are open. We choose destinations that give you options. Some people hike. Some people sit. Some find their colleagues and don’t stop talking for three hours. We don’t script it, because we trust that you know what you need.
So–is this a retreat? No–we think it’s an immersive continuing education adventure!
